Raval
| Raju Raval of Fort Wayne, a senior at IU Bloomington, has been named one of 32 Rhodes Scholars nationwide and the only Hoosier student to receive the prestigious award for year 2001.
Rhodes scholarships provide two or three years of study at the University of Oxford in England. The oldest of the international study awards available to American students, they were created in 1902 by the estate of Cecil Rhodes, a British philanthropist and South African colonialist.
Raval, 21, was named a year 2000 Truman Scholar, which carries a $30,000 stipend, and is a Wells Scholar at IU. He is majoring in biochemistry, biology, Spanish and religious studies.
He plans to obtain a doctoral degree in molecular oncology at Oxford. Currently, he is assisting Milton Taylor, professor of biology at IUB, in researching the diagnostics and progression of breast cancer micrometastases.
Raval wants to pursue a career in research on cancer and, ultimately, use his knowledge to work to influence health policy.
