| Proposal deadline for grants from the Indiana University Arts and Humanities Initiative, outlined in the Oct. 10 State of the University address by IU President Myles Brand, are due March 1.
The initiative will provide $1 million per year for four years to projects with an arts and humanities emphasis and will be centrally administered by Research and the University Graduate School (RUGS). All full-time, tenure track IU faculty may submit proposals for resources to facilitate outstanding research or creative activity in the arts and humanities.
Those applying for an award should submit seven copies of a brief description of the proposed research or creative activity with an accompanying budget (no more than 1,000 words). Proposals must clearly state the methods and significance of the research or creative activity and the projected result (publications, presentations, exhibitions, etc.).
The support of the department or division chair for any release time must be clearly indicated in the proposal. There also should be a supporting letter from an expert in the field (not necessarily from IU) assessing the significance of the project and the likelihood of its completion.
There will be two deadlines each academic year for proposals, one in the spring semester and one in the fall. Proposals will be reviewed by a faculty panel with expertise in diverse areas of arts and the humanities. This committee will make recommendations for funding to George Walker, IU vice president of research and dean of the University Graduate School.
Individual research or creative activity program proposals
Some examples of uses of funds include but are not limited to: summer and academic year support for faculty; travel grants for research purposes; matching funds for outside fellowships and other kinds of research or creative activity grants.
Collaborative program proposals
Examples include intra- or inter-campus projects composed of two or more faculty members or faculty and students that facilitate collaborative research or creative activity interests of faculty.
The maximum individual award will be approximately $50,000 or one-half of a faculty member’s academic-year salary.
Proposals should include name(s); campus address, telephone number, Fax number and E-mail address for faculty member designated the principal investigator; project title; brief description of the project, indicating the arts and humanities focus, significance and anticipated results; budget; indication of support from department or division chair; letter of support from an expert in the field; and current brief curriculum vitae.
