'I’ll Change the World—Maybe’

Turner

Richard Turner, professor of English and philanthropic studies at IUPUI, will present a seminar, "I’ll Change the World—Maybe: Ambivalence about Philanthropy in Literature." The seminar will be Thursday (Jan. 23) at 4 p.m. at the Poynter Center, 618 E. Third St., Bloomington. Parking is available in the lot south of the Poynter Center.

Turner will examine the ambivalence in the works of many writers, including reservations about philanthropy’s ability to alleviate suffering or change the world for the better. He will look at Jonathan Swift’s "A Modest Proposal," Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, George Eliot’s Middlemarch, Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man and Kurt Vonnegut Jr.’s God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater as texts that present ambivalent images of philanthropy.

The seminar is presented by the Center on Philanthropy and the Poynter Center for the Study of Ethics and American Institutions.
