Schreuder
On Dec. 12, Indiana University dedicated the Midwest Proton Radiation
Institute (MPRI) located at the IU Cyclotron Facility (IUCF) on the
Bloomington campus. Andries (Niek) Schreuder, head medical physicist
at MPRI, was available after the dedication ceremony to show visitors
the new facility.
Proton radiation therapy, which has been available on both the East
and West Coasts for several years, is used to treat cancerous tumors
that reside in particularly critical or delicate areas of the body.
Unlike traditional radiation therapy, proton therapy’s beams are more
precise and less diffuse, enabling tumors to be attacked without harming
surrounding healthy tissues. This makes proton therapy especially
useful in treating cancers located about the head, face and spinal
areas, and also in treating children.
