If you think December 2002 was cold and snowy, well, it didn’t begin
to compare to what wooly mammoths endured during the Ice Age, padding
about Indiana and most of the rest of the American Midwest; what
led to their extinction, some believe, was the appetites of human
hunters. If you’d like to start the new year right, the Indiana
Geological Survey 2003 wall calendar is now available. The calendar
features a reproduction of a mural depicting the beasts, which was
painted some years ago by the late IGS artist Robert Judah. The
mural graces the wall of what is now known as the Patton Memorial
Conference Room at the IGS, to honor the memory of the late John
B. Patton, 12th Hoosier state geologist. The 16 x 26 inch calendar,
designed by IGS graphic artist Matt Berry, is available through
the IGS publication sales office (telephone 812-855-7636; E-mail
IGSINFO@indiana.edu) for
$1, plus tax and postage/handling if applicable.
