| Industry leaders had the opportunity to view new technology and software programs developed by IUPUI scientists at today’s (Jan. 17) Connect Tech 2003 at the University Place Conference Center and Hotel.
"We encouraged business leaders from all disciplines to come to Connect Tech to see how new technology can benefit their business," said Kim Manlove, co-chair of Connect Tech and assistant dean of the faculties. "Connect Tech was created to demonstrate technology research on the IUPUI campus and to promote engagement and partnerships between the university and the private sector."
One of the many demonstrations at Connect Tech was the PercepTable, developed by the Visualization and Interactive Spaces Lab, a component of the Pervasive Technology Labs at IU. The PercepTable is an affordable, easy-to-use display station, especially well suited for interacting with geographical information, such as streets and landmarks.
Through the use of a PercepTable, computer-generated graphics can be projected onto a horizontal surface, where users can interact with an installed software application, such as map of Indianapolis, a building blueprint or a patient's internal body scan. One or more users may interact with the program by manipulating small tools that are tracked by a video camera.
"Sitting around a table is the preferred approach for many decision-makers to analyze data and exchange information," said Polly Baker, director of the Visualization and Interactive Spaces Lab. "The PercepTable could be useful to architects, city planners, doctors, meeting planners, convention centers and area attractions, such as museums. For example, convention planners could highlight area attractions, hotels and restaurants."
"We'd be delighted to talk to local business leaders about potential uses for the PercepTable," continued Baker.
The second annual conference will engage participants in demonstrations and informative sessions covering the fields of advanced manufacturing, life sciences and information technology. Connect Tech will also provide information on available educational resources, including internships, co-op opportunities and continuing education for working professionals.
Schools that will participate in Connect Tech include the IU schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Informatics/New Media, and Business and the Purdue schools of Science and Engineering and Technology. The Advanced Research and Technology Institute, Pervasive Technology Labs at IU and the IUPUI University Library will also contribute to the event.
