Coach makes breast cancer pledge—if the bleachers are filled next week

Kathi Bennett, coach of the women’s basketball team at IU Bloomington, wants to establish a new single-game attendance record—and she’s putting her money where her mouth is. She has pledged $5,000 of her own money to the Wabash Valley affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer if the Hoosiers break their existing attendance record of 5,503 when they host Wisconsin at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24, at Assembly Hall in Bloomington

High school and middle school girls' basketball programs throughout the state of Indiana have been invited to attend the game, compliments of the IUB Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. Schools interested in taking advantage of the offer may contact the IU Sports Marketing Office at 812-855-9517 for information.

Volunteers from the Komen Foundation will be involved on game day, passing out information and educational materials about breast cancer and accepting donations.

Tickets are $4 for adults and $2 for children, with IU students admitted free. Groups of 20 or more get in for $2 per person, and fans interested in purchasing group tickets and donating them to youth organizations may call toll-free, 1-866-IUSPORTS, for information.

"Having fans in the stands really is a difference-maker in close games, especially in conference," Bennett said. "This team relies on defense, and defense comes from the heart. Having people in the stands makes us play that much harder. This team works so hard as it is, and they deserve it."
