The IU School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (HPER) in Bloomington will sponsor an “Aging and Living Well” conference as a part of IU’s Life Sciences Week on Friday, Jan. 28, at the Marten House Hotel and Conference Center in Indianapolis. Workshop topics will address issues related to maintaining physical health and wellness throughout the aging process, including nutrition, improving the memory, pharmacology, Alzheimer’s and others. Corresponding continuing education credits will be provided.
HPER is involved in research and scholarly activities that directly benefit the health and wellness of citizens of today’s society. Its research directly impacts the development of healthful lifestyles, from scientific research in the areas of nutrition and human movement, to identifying new methods and patterns of behavior for increasing the quality of life and overall health of all citizens, from infants to seniors.
Faculty members Barbara Hawkins and Lesa Lorenzen Huber of HPER direct the IU Center on Aging and Aged, which works to implement and encourage activities throughout the university that contribute to the understanding and improvement of the health, education, and welfare of the older population. Huber will present a workshop on strategies to improve the memory, and Hawkins will present her research findings from the Global Aging Research Network (GARNet) study of aging and adult well-being, a multi-country collaborative project coordinated by Hawkins.
Other workshop presenters include faculty and associates of the IU School of Medicine, the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, the School of Dentistry, and the School of Physical Education and Tourism Management at IUPUI. Alumni associations of these schools, as well as the Alumni Club of Indianapolis are co-sponsors. Exhibitor or vendor space is available.
