150 years after the

Dred Scott decision

After 11 years of litigation that began in St. Louis Circuit Court, the U.S. Supreme Court in March 1857 denied Dred Scott and his family their freedom, claiming that neither free blacks nor slaves could be U.S. citizens, that slaves were, in fact, "personal property" and thus lacked civil rights to bring a federal suit in the first place. During Black History Month in February, the IU campuses set aside time to explore the African-American experience, both current and historical. Image from the U.S. Library of Congress archives
