Life sciences

A $105 million grant from the Lilly Endowment to Indiana University and the creation of the Indiana Genomics Initiative in December 2000 came on the heels of an announcement from the Human Genome Project that a "working draft" of the genome was complete. Five years later, the university continues to stride forward with its commitment to advancing the life sciences and economic development in the state. Dr. Craig Brater, dean of the IU School of Medicine, has been named vice president for the life sciences, and IU and Purdue have established a collaborative program for research in the life sciences and informatics.

Remembering MLK

Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 16 is an official university holiday, and activities take the form of service projects, forums and commemorations on IU campuses throughout the state that extend well into the month.

The incredible, getable infrared ray

Astronauts were the first to discover that infrared therapy speeds the healing of wounds, and futurists predict that even aging itself might be slowed down by the therapy. Read Jenny Cohen's feature about researchers at the IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs who are exploring the impact of infrared light on early-age chicken embryos.

International outreach

IU President Adam Herbert was a participant in the U.S. University Presidents Summit on International Education earlier this month. In December, the university's international studies program was honored by the Goldman Sachs Foundation.

Extending campus borders

IU East biologist Michael Foos finds a living lab of fungi in Yellowstone National Park, and IU Southeast ceramicist John Guenther sets the table for the arts in the Louisville metropolitan area.

Third-year slack

A study by the IU Center for Postsecondary Research finds that law students tend to lose momentum in final year of study.
