| Michael McRobbie was appointed vice president for information technology and chief information officer at Indiana University in 1997. In those roles, he is responsible for all information technology matters at seven campuses of Indiana University.
As vice president, McRobbie leads the implementation of a comprehensive IU-wide information technology strategic plan designed to make IU a leader in the use and application of information technology. In addition, he is chief executive officer of the Indiana Pervasive Computing Research Initiative—funded by a $29.9 million grant from the Lilly Endowment Inc.—to develop six world-class research laboratories at Indiana University.
McRobbie also holds professorships in computer science and philosophy, and adjunct professorships in cognitive science and information science at the IU Bloomington campus. Also, he is a professor of computer technology in the Purdue School of Engineering at IUPUI.
Before joining IU, McRobbie was a professor in the Institute of Advanced Study at the Australian National University and chief executive officer of the Cooperative Research Center for Advanced Computational Systems.
He is a member of the Sun Microsystems Academic Advisory Council, the Dell Platinum Council, the Internet2 Network Policy and Planning Advisory Council, the Internet2 Abilene Executive Committee, the OpenGlobe Board of Directors and the Executive Committee of the Indiana Technology Partnership.
