Center for the Built Environment

CAET-affiliated center enhances community collaborations

The Center for the Built Environment (CBE) was established in the IPFW Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering Technology (CAET) for the purpose of consolidating the varied experience and expertise of its faculty when involved in multi-disciplinary projects generated from community and service learning agreements, technical service agreements and grants.

The types of projects performed include land-use planning, forensic analysis, material testing, commercial and residential design, geotechnical investigation and environmental studies. Specific projects are the Broadway Corridor Plan in Fort Wayne, the Southwest Allen County Schools Land Use Plan, an IPFW Alumni Center and the Oaklawn Court Apartments Redevelopment in Fort Wayne.

The CAET department faculty represents a broad range of professionals involved in projects for the built environment. This includes architects, structural engineers, construction managers, surveyors and interior designers.

The extensive experience of the faculty and the fact that they regularly work together on a variety of projects, both contractual and pro bono, assures that all clients will receive competent, creative and professional results from any collaboration with the CBE.

The CAET department had a long history of consultation and community service projects but lacked the focus that is now available through the coordinating function of the CBE. All projects related to the built environment are welcomed by the center.

For example, the center has just embarked on a project to adapt an existing biological research station at the Hoosier community of Crooked Lake that has been turned over to IPFW by Indiana University. The facilities will be evaluated and redesigned to include two teaching laboratories, a medium-sized conference/teaching area and overnight facilities for 20 persons.

This type of project benefits the faculty through professional development, the university through extended facilities and the community through enhanced sites for community seminars and research.
