Dia de Los Muertos

Ann Fritz, IU Northwest galleries director, believes altars displayed at the Dia de Los Muertos: Day of the Dead exhibit are powerful. “The altars are incredible,” she says. “Some are traditional, while some are very contemporary. The gallery gets very eerie and I’m not the only one who has sensed it. It’s almost like the spirits are there.”

The Mexican tradition of building altars to celebrate and honor the deceased is the central focus of the display in Gallery Northwest. The altar display runs Monday, Oct. 11, through Nov. 5. The altars are constructed by the living for the dead, and can include photographs and personal items of the deceased, and various symbolic items.
