| Pieced together by tiles, a donor recognition plaque will be prominently displayed inside the entryway of the new life sciences addition at Indiana University Southeast.
Like a jigsaw puzzle, the artwork created by Plaschke Design Group of Louisville depicts the various academic disciplines that are being taught in the expanded and renovated Life Sciences Building, which houses the School of Natural Sciences and the Division of Nursing.
Donors who contributed at least $1,000 will be recognized by having their names engraved in gold plates on each tile of the plaque. Through IU Southeast’s Capital Campaign, $300,000 has been raised for equipment and technology, but an additional $1 million is needed to adequately equip the new labs.
The expansion more than doubles the size of the original building and impacts the Southeast campus by raising the element of sophistication to the teaching environment. For example, now there are undergraduate research labs, new computer labs, a controlled growth chamber and upgraded laboratories.
For the Division of Nursing, a new advanced Health Assessments Lab enables nursing students to learn how to apply classroom instruction in a more realistic setting to prepare them for clinical work. The new lab houses five patient-care units equipped with electronic beds to give students a true sense of working in a hospital.
“I’m excited and pleased about the opportunities the new facility provides us. This will help us maintain the quality program we desire,” said Lillian Yeager, interim dean of the campus’ nursing program.
“The new facility adds significantly to all of the programs of the School of Natural Sciences and we are excited about the additional space,” said Joe Renwick, dean of the school.
