| The many highlights of the $13 million Science Building at IU Kokomo include a high-tech classroom that can serve as a large lecture hall or for other activities requiring the latest in audiovisual and computer technologies; more than a dozen labs accommodating biology, chemistry and physics classes; facilities including a cold room for preparation of experiments; and a plant growth chamber.
Two new programs are being planned at IU Kokomo as a result of new instrumentation and space added to the campus — radiographic technology and health/information technology. IU Kokomo’s new chemistry major will also be aided significantly by the new accommodations.
“There will be a major impact on recruitment and retention of students from the construction of this building,” said Robert Roales, assistant dean of the School of Allied Health Sciences. “This building, our programs, new equipment and excellent faculty members are for any student looking for a high-quality science education. Our students will have state-of-the-art equipment for hands-on use opportunities within undergraduate research.”
Additionally, the building will radically change the physical environment of the campus. The L-shaped configuration of the building forms two sides of an “ internal courtyard” using the East Building and Kelley Center as the two other enclosing sides, explained IU Kokomo Chancellor Ruther Person in an HP “Viewpoint” column this past spring. The new “courtyard” will function as the true outdoor center of the campus visually connect the major campus buildings, function as a major pedestrian traffic way and serve as a place for members of the campus community to enjoy meeting and interacting.
