New neonatal nurse practitioner master’s degree to be offered

The IU School of Nursing will offer a neonatal nurse practitioner master of science in nursing degree on the IUPUI campus. Registered nurses with an interest in neonatal specialty practice are encouraged to apply by Oct. 1 for admission to the first class.

Neonatal nurse practitioners care of newborns with a variety of conditions requiring treatment in hospital neonatal intensive care units. Prematurity, sepsis, respiratory distress and disorders or abnormalities requiring surgery are the most common diagnoses found among infants in neonatal intensive care units. Many such units are understaffed, according to Dr. Sharon Sims, professor and chair of the IU School of Nursing’s Family Health Department.
