IU Bloomington’s apparel
merchandising program was praised in the May 1 edition of Women’s
Wear Daily, ranking among top schools nationwide that display
"fashion savvy." Other schools praised included Smith College and
Duke University. IU’s program, according to WWD, is "highly
respected in the industry and the students are incredibly savvy…Clearly,
Indiana students are well on their way to careers in the fashion field."
Fashion forecast for fall semester? Look for designer bags, "juicy
couture sweats in velour and cashmere," and a mixing of "high and
lows"—designer fashions mixed with bargain-basement and second-hand
finds.

July 26 marks the 13th anniversary of the Americans
with Disabilities Act (ADA). IU has been the headquarters of a collaborative
program with the National Park Service called the National Center
on Accessibility since 1992. Housed at IU’s Bradford Woods in Martinsville,
NCA has played a critical role in increasing awareness of inclusion
of people with disabilities in parks, recreation and tourism while
advancing the spirit and intent of the ADA, the Rehabilitation Act
and other disability legislation. NCA’s summer edition of Access
Today is online and parents of children with disabilities and/or
chronic illnesses who are interested in advice on selecting a camp
program should check out the new publication, Discover Camp
at this Web site:

IUB students in the Department of Apparel Merchandising
and Interior Design have been assisting the Bloomington Council
for Community Accessibility (CCA) in the council’s long-term project
of surveying local businesses regarding accessibility. The project
has included on-site visits to assess parking, routes customers
take to and through a business, doors, common areas, restrooms and
drinking fountains. Students and members of the CCA have then assisted
merchants in making their places of business more accessible according
to ADA standards; on Saturday, July 26, at 9:30 a.m. in the Showers
Common, several owners of local businesses will be awarded "AccessAbility"
decals by the CCA.
