Three Indiana University faculty members from across the state have been selected to receive the first set of this year's IU SBC Fellow Awards to develop teaching and learning technologies. This year's program, Round 6, focuses on leveraging the capabilities of IU's learning environment through exploration in: Oncourse Collaboration and Learning (CL) environment (a Web-based system used to enhance student, peer and faculty communication); learning spaces and wireless technologies; ePortfolio (an electronic-based portfolio of assignments, documents and multi-media projects); and multi-campus collaboration.
The recipients are:
• Dennis Groth, “Transitioning Capstone Projects to Oncourse CL and e-Portfolio,” School of Informatics, IU Bloomington;
• Margaret Branstrator, “Virtual Environment Field Trips,” Division of Natural Science and Mathematics, IU East; and
• Wanda Worley, “Preparing Innovation in Technical Communication: An Evaluation and Planning Study,” School of Engineering and Technology, IUPUI.
Each recipient is awarded a $2,500 grant to pursue applications in the category of Preparing for Innovation. Fellows will share best practices for solving complex issues associated with moving course materials from the original Oncourse system (IU's former Web-based teaching and learning application) to Oncourse CL. Two more sets of grants, in the categories of Examining Innovation ($5,000 grant level) and Implementing Innovation ($15,000 grant level), will be awarded during the 2005-2006 academic year.
Deadlines for submissions are Sept. 19 and Jan. 9, respectively.
IU established the SBC Fellows Program in the fall of 1999, through a $1 million gift from SBC. Since 1999, 57 faculty projects have been awarded to support the innovation of teaching and learning technology. The award program is administered by the University Information Technology Services.
