This past March, the IU School of Nursing on the Richmond campus held its fourth annual gala, generating approximately $8,000 in support of nursing students.

Monies raised will be used to support teaching and learning for nursing students at IU East. Since 1997, the nursing division has received almost $30,000 in public, private and corporate gala support.

Karen Clark, interim dean, said monetary support has aided the nursing division in its quest to provide nursing scholarships, secure learning lab equipment and support student attendance at professional conferences.

With nearly 100 guests in attendance, this year’s gala was exceptional, Clark remarked. “It is a time for us to celebrate the profession of nursing and to take the time to acknowledge those who give so selflessly to others. Over the years, our gala has provided an opportunity to honor alumni and friends of IU East who have distinguished themselves by demonstrating an uncompromising commitment to the profession of nursing.”

Organizers added a new component to the 2004 fund raiser—the Alumni Excellence Award, which was presented to Monica Reilly for outstanding achievement by an IU East alumna. IU East 2004 Nursing Excellence Award recipients were Joanne Raines Warner for nursing education and Beverly Garnet for nursing practice. Previous Lifetime Achievement in Nursing Award recipients included Jayne Spencer and Jane Vincent, (2002); Clarice Warrick and Ruth Neff, (1999); and LaDonna Jensen, (1997).  Also in 1997, Mary Martin received the Lifetime Service to Nursing Award.
