| Indiana University East nursing graduates are in demand in east central Indiana and west central Ohio as the need for nursing practitioners grows and area hospitals continue to expand.
In an effort to meet that need, IU East will kick off its Campaign for Community for the IU School of Nursing in upcoming months, according to Brent Pieper, executive director of institutional advancement.
The Campaign for Community, a joint fund-raising effort by IU East and Purdue University’s School of Technology, contains four priority areas—life and information sciences and labs, scholarships, art gallery and collection and business and entrepreneurship.
Campaign organizers expect to raise more than $600,000 for nursing and science labs and equipment, and life and information science projects.
“Our reality is to turn out graduates who are well trained and ready for the competitive job market. Students must be exposed to the latest techniques and equipment. They need dedicated laboratory space where they can learn, experiment and investigate. Our students must be prepared for an increasingly sophisticated world of technology,” Pieper said, explaining the need for the joint fund-raising effort.
Pieper said private support to the IU East science and nursing labs today will likely have a direct benefit to the IU East donor, family member or friend tomorrow. “IU East graduates in the sciences make vital contributions each day in laboratories all over the state and will help ensure Indiana a future of advancement in medicine, teaching and technology,” he said.
“We know that students educated in the sciences will be the trained workforce needed to attract new industries to the surrounding communities. Students with laboratory skills in biology and chemistry are being actively recruited to work in industries in Indianapolis and Cincinnati,” Pieper added.
Fortunately, a large percentage of IU East nursing graduates remain in east central Indiana and west central Ohio communities. The presence of IU East graduates in nursing and the life sciences has a direct bearing on the level of health care provided to residents of this region.
