New bridge to connect IU South Bend campus with adjoining property

At its April meeting, the IU Trustees approved plans to construct a $2.1 million lighted foot bridge over the St. Joseph River, which will connect IU South Bend to the site of the former Playland Golf Course.

The design will feature poured concrete piers with “Indiana University” emblazoned on the railings.

Construction of the 1,000-foot bridge will begin in the spring of 2003 with completion estimated in the fall of that year. The bridge will connect the 26.45 acres to the main campus. The land was purchased in 1994, and the long term plans for the property include residential housing and athletic fields.
