Indianapolis will be overflowing with ceramic pieces in area galleries, as the city hosts the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) 38th annual conference, March 17-20. In conjunction with the conference, "Investigations, Inspirations: The Alchemy of Art and Science," which will draw more than 4,000 participants, the Herron School of Art at IUPUI will be among several galleries to showcase thousands of ceramic pieces created by international ceramicists, Herron alumni, regional ceramic students and Herron ceramic students.
As a conference highlight, the Herron Gallery, 1701 N. Pennsylvania
St., Indianapolis, will feature the NCECA 2004 invitational
exhibition, Biomimicry: The Art of Imitating Life.
The show runs through April 3.
"It paints a positive picture of an alternative future," said David Russick, co-curator of the exhibit and curator of the Herron Gallery.
Gallery hours for the show are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday; and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday and Saturday. For more information on the invitational exhibit, call 317-920-2420.
Other exhibits Herron will host during the NCECA conference include: * "12" - March 16-20; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., daily, Old RIS Warehouse Building, 1302 Stadium Drive. The exhibit will feature ceramic pieces from 12 college and university programs. Participating schools include: IPFW, IU Southeast, Indiana State University, Notre Dame University; Purdue University; Southern Illinois University; Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville; University of Cincinnati; University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign; University of Kentucky; University of Louisville; and the University of Southern Indiana.
* "Herron Alumni Exhibition" - March 16-20; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., daily, Herron Ceramics/Sculpture Gallery, 1350 Stadium Drive. Herron alumni Jeff Dalton, Yukari Fukuta, Ashley Kim, Jason Kishell, Melissa Parrott, Paul Wandless and Sigrid Zahner will exhibit ceramic pieces.
* "Current BFA Candidates in Clay" - March 16-20; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., daily, Herron Ceramics/Sculpture Room 101, 1350 Stadium Drive. Juniors and seniors in Herron's ceramics program will exhibit their work.
Along with these exhibits, Herron School will host a slide presentation of ceramic artists Karen Gunderman, Michael McKean and Brad Miller. The presentation will be at 3 p.m., Friday, March 19, at the Herron Auditorium, 1701 N. Pennsylvania St., Indianapolis.
More than 70 galleries and alternative spaces are expected to feature ceramics as part of the conference.
