‘The Dark Side of the Universe’

Steinhardt

Paul Steinhardt, Albert Einstein Professor of science at Princeton University, will present the 12th Joseph and Sophia Konopinski Memorial Lecture in Physics Thursday, March 7, at 7:30 p.m. in Rawles Hall 100 on the IU Bloomington campus.

Ordinary matter—everything seen or felt—does not account for all the substance in the universe. It was long believed that the remainder consists of “dark matter” in the form of weakly interacting massive particles. Growing evidence suggests that ordinary and dark matter combined make up only a small fraction of the universe.

Most of the remainder consists of some ubiquitous “dark energy” with the remarkable property that it is gravitationally self-repulsive, causing the expansion of the universe to accelerate. Steinhardt will review the evidence, present some plausible explanations and show their implications for the future of the universe.
