A Bridge over Jordan River

 |
| IU Home Pages photographer Paul Martens captured these
images of the Bloomington inner campus after one of a set of
snowstorms last week. Thanks to the Physical Plant’s Campus
Division, plows are usually first on the scene, clearing the
way for safe passage of students, faculty and staff making their
ways to offices and classrooms. Forty-three workers and five
supervisors make up the division, according to IUB division
manager Dave Hurst. |

| The Bloomington campus has miles of pathways, sidewalks, bridges,
parking lots and entryways which must be cleared after each
snowfall. According to Hurst, Campus Division partnered with
Building Services a couple years ago to deal with snow removal.
Custodians routinely clear walks and landings in their assignment
areas. Still, on a winter such as this, Campus Division personnel
have been working hundreds of hours of overtime to maintain
safe routes for the campus community. |
For Whom the Snow Tolls

Home Pages’ salutes the men and women of the Campus
Division at IU Bloomington, and Physical Plant personnel university-wide
for their dedicated service throughout this prolific Hoosier
winter. Can spring be far away? In Bloomington, the flakes
will give way to 35,000 red tulips, the bulbs of which are
planted under what seems to be a never-ending winter landscape.

Put the Bike on Ice
|
 |
| While Dave Hurst’s crews cover the Bloomington campus in assigned
quadrants, their first response goes to locations that are most
utilized. For instance, if a basketball game or an opera is
scheduled soon after a snowfall, first response takes in Assembly
Hall and the Musical Arts Center and its surroundings. If the
snow falls during the night, first response goes to roadways
and sidewalks where campus business will be conducted the following
morning. Safety is always paramount, and Hurst advises the campus
community to use common sense as well: don’t ride bikes in the
snow; wear boots and store the high heels. |
