The Mack Center for Inquiry on Teaching and Learning has selected five new fellows to receive research funding. The awards are sponsored by the Faculty Colloquium for Excellence in Teaching (FACET) and the P.A. and Marian Mack Endowment. Fellows are:
• Eugenia Fernandez, computer and information technology at IUPUI, will survey teaching strategies used in online courses at IUPUI and create and test an instrument to categorize those strategies.
• Carol Hostetter, School of Social Work, IU Bloomington, will be studying one aspect of online coursework: social presence. She recently completed work on a project relating to the educational needs of child welfare workers.
• Jay Howard, sociology, IUPU-Columbus, is seeking a connection between learning goals identified in The Principles of Undergraduate Learning and teaching methods in introductory sociology courses. He hopes to determine whether the amount and nature of classroom discussion, the use of Oncourse and small-group activities contribute to student learning.
• Mark Hoyert, psychology, IU Northwest, will explore an empirical study to examine variants of motivational factors and an intervention to aid struggling students. He hopes to design both a study examining variants of performance orientation and an intervention to aid poorly motivated students. He has previously studied the effects of goal orientation among introductory psychology students.
• Randy Isaacson, School of Education, IU South Bend, will focus on the contribution of reflection—specifically, metacognitive awareness—to student learning in higher education and the potential impact of classroom practice and technology in facilitating this reflection in college students.
The Mack Center welcomes full-time faculty of IU campuses to submit project proposals; deadline is in September. For information, follow these FACET links:
