IU Bloomington residence halls get an exclusive link to outside Internet sites

By Greg Moore
University Information Technology Services (UITS) at Indiana University Bloomington recently installed a second high-capacity Internet connection that serves IUB residence halls. The connection, with peak in-bound and out-bound capacities of 45Mbps (45 million bits per second), provides IUB residence halls with an exclusive link to Internet sites outside IU that is separate from other campus Internet data traffic. The new connection, added to an existing 45Mbps circuit, doubles the overall campus capacity to carry computer data traffic to and from the external Internet and benefits the Bloomington campus by moving Internet traffic from the residence halls off of the campus-wide connection.

“We added the new connection to alleviate congestion, provide better network usability and management, and give the students in residence halls their own window on the

Internet,” said Terry Usrey, director of UITS data telecommunications. We recognize that the Internet has become an integral part of student life at IU and greater bandwidth was necessary to accommodate increased student use.”

In addition to the new connection, UITS has created a Web site to help campus housing residents monitor their personal usage of the network and learn how to take greater control over their Internet connection. The Web site has links to learn about various network-related issues, read news and announcements about the university network, and get statistics for personal usage and current network traffic.

“We’ve also had to recognize that bandwidth is becoming an increasingly precious commodity that is limited and must be managed well,” said Usrey. “With new bandwidth-hungry multimedia network applications being released every day, it is important that students be able to understand the issues of their own Internet connection. We think this site will prove invaluable to help students better monitor their personal network usage.”
