African beadwork and beads on exhibit in Bloomington

Whether fashioned into jewelry or clothing, or attached to household or ritual objects, African beads and beadwork have been important decorative elements in sub-Saharan Africa for centuries and frequently have meaning beyond their visual appeal.

Through May 26, an exhibit of beads in a variety of colors, shapes, sizes and materials are on display in the IU Art Museum on the Bloomington campus in the Wielgus Gallery of the Arts of Africa, Oceania and the Americas on the third floor. The exhibit is drawn from the museum’s permanent collection and private lenders.
