Herron’s ‘Earth, Air, Fire & Water’ exhibit to feature video artist Viola
By Angie Antonopoulos

The Herron Gallery at IUPUI has transformed itself into a walking show piece, as part of Earth, Air, Fire & Water, an exhibit which opens Friday, Jan. 23, and runs through Feb. 21.

Installation artwork, or artwork that extends from created objects to their surroundings, will be featured as part of an exhibit presented by the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art (iMOCA) and the Herron Gallery.

The show will feature four artists: Charles Gick, Jeremy Tubbs, Patrick Zentz and Bill Viola. Each artist will contribute work which relates to the theme of the most basic four earthly elements.

The exhibition will open to the public from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. Jan. 23 at the Herron Gallery, 1701 N. Pennsylvania St., Indianapolis.

Among the highlights is a video installation piece, created by internationally renowned video artist Bill Viola. "The Messenger," originally presented in the Durham Cathedral in England, examines connections to the elements and the delicate nature of that relationship.

"Each of these artists has contributed something unique for our space," said David Russick, director and curator of the Herron Gallery. "The presence of these four installations has completely transformed the Herron Gallery. Even for regular visitors to the gallery, the space will seem unfamiliar."

Russick added that it has been a great experience working with iMOCA. "Their commitment to contemporary art is a real boon to the city," he said.

The mission of iMOCA is to bring contemporary exhibitions and programs to the community to stimulate minds, inspire new discoveries and demonstrate vital connections between life and visual culture. For more information:
