Recent accomplishments

Diane Glosson was named the Student Representative to Learning Sciences faculty and will be attending faculty meetings and speaking on behalf of the graduate student community throughout the 2010-2011 academic year.

Rafi Santo attended the recent Mozilla Drumbeat Festival in Barcelona, Spain.

Maria Solomou had a symposium proposal ("Understanding motivation in context: Learning to build in 3D through in-game narrative participation") accepted for presentation at the European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction (EARLI), Exeter, U.K., 30 August - 3 Septembar 2011. Maria also received an Award for her 2010 ICLS presentation, "Building Creativity: Collaborative Learning and Creativity in a Virtual Gaming Environment."

Jenna McWilliams was named a HASTAC Scholar for 2010-2011. She recently presented a talk entitled "When we tell kids they can make a difference...and we're wrong" at the International Association for Research on Service Learning and Community Engagement.

Jackie Barnes will be presenting a sole-authored piece, "Creativity as Intercontextuality in Math Education" at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in April. Jackie was also a co-author for "Why videogames are not teacherproof: The central role of the teacher when using new technologies in the classroom" which was accepted for the 2011 AERA annual conference.

Michael Downton was named the Robert I. Long award winner for leadership in 2007. Michael recently secured funding from the Institute for Advance Study at Indiana University to bring Professor Jeanne Bamberger, Professor Emerita at M.I.T. and visiting professor at U.C. Berkeley, to IU as a visiting scholar. Michael will be presenting Pieces for Peace: Using Impromptu to Build Musical and Cross-Cultural Understanding at the 2011 AERA conference in New Orleans.
