Academics | Q Classes
“Q-class,” the 1-credit Q199 “Residential Learning Workshop” at Collins, is required of all incoming freshmen—and highly recommended for sophomore newcomers.
Course Description
Not only does Q199 help freshmen integrate into the Collins, IU, and Bloomington communities, but students intellectually explore the five principles of Collins with the guidance of current resident peer teachers. The course culminates in a “Q project,” which is the active interpretation of one (or more) of Collins’ key values.
Goals
- Engaging Collins’ key values through readings and discussion
- Exploring Collins, IU, and Bloomington resources
- Helping students integrate into their new communities
- Investigating cultural/multicultural aspects of Collins, IU, and Bloomington
- Guiding Q projects that benefit the communit(ies)
Why Q-Class?
Why does Collins ask freshmen to take Q199? Past and present staff and residents have found that it benefits both newcomers and the community at large.
- Q-class gives you a chance to bring problems, concerns, and questions to an understanding group of peers on a regular basis. Your Q classmates may become some of your first college friends.
- Q class shows you how to utilize the many resources available to you at Collins -- including staff, student groups, equipment, labs, and studios -- as well as how to plan and get funding for your own program ideas.
- Q class can help you make the adjustment to the relative freedom and new responsibilities of college.
- Q class can help you find a niche at IU and in the Bloomington community, and help you relate to others with whom you may think you don't have much in common.
