Alternative Architectures for Optimality Theory

This course will critically examine various proposals for
modifying one or more of Optimality Theory's basic
assumptions. These will include some or all of stratal OT,
harmonic serialism targeted constraints, contrast
preservation, stochastic OT, sympathy, comparative
markedness, and Prof. McCarthy's recent work on candidate
chains. Phonological opacity will be a particular focus of
attention.
