Collection Development Policy
GENERAL
OBJECTIVES
- To develop a
collection which supports the undergraduate and graduate curriculum in
the field of political science and other related disciplines.
- Strong
emphasis is given to the acquisition of materials necessary for research
by all members of the academic community whose focus is in the area of
political science.
- The collection supports instruction and research for the
B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees.
This fund also receives monographs on two approval plans.
- The library has
an approval plan for books published by US, Canadian and British
university presses. For more details regarding specific presses and
subject areas covered by the plan, go to the University Press
Approval Plan.
- The other approval plan covers non-university
scholarly presses in the social sciences and humanities. For more details
regarding specific presses and subject areas covered by the plan, go to
the Social
Sciences and Humanities Approval Plan.
If you need a book rush
cataloged or want to be notified for a book on order, go to the MPS homepage.

GEOGRAPHY
As a rule, materials dealing with other geographical areas are not
considered if they focus on individual counties especially if they are
countries covered by area librarians. Materials are considered if they
deal with a particular subject on a continental basis, or large
geographical areas. This is to insure that important works of such a
nature are acquired if they have not been, by the area librarians.

SCOPE OF
COVERAGE
The acquisitions policy for political science is also determined by
several other considerations:
- Materials are not
considered if their contents are contained in other sources, e.g.
government publications, periodicals, etc.
- Materials which are a
compilation of articles such as edited works and readers, unless the work
is a collection of original essays, are not collected.
- The acquisitions
policy is also determined by language consideration. Comprehensive
coverage of English language materials, selective coverage of materials in
French, German, Spanish and Italian and very selective coverage of
materials in Dutch and the Scandinavian languages.
- The emphasis of
collection development is to acquire materials supporting current
research.
- Historical studies covering the last twenty-five years are also
collected.
FORMATS
COLLECTED
Acquisition of introductory texts is made on
a very selective basis. Retrospective acquisitions are done very
selectively, focusing on the purchase of important works, the addition
of which serve to correct deficiencies or weaknesses in the collection
as it has evolved over time. Retrospective selections include reviewing
reprint publications, microfilm collections, and out-of-print catalogs.
The emphasis of collection development is to acquire materials
supporting current research.
