"Understanding Memory" Week Two
Tips for Library Assignment

Finding a recent article about a concept in psychology
A good place to look is Academic Search Premier, a database of articles from both popular and scholarly magazines and journals. Here's a sample search:

Finding newspaper or magazine articles published during the war in Vietnam
Search Readers Guide Retrospective (When you click on this link, you'll see a list of databases. Choose Readers Guide and click on Search at the bottom of the screen). Use specific search terms such as names and places. To make sure you get materials published during the war, limit your search by date. Here's a sample search:

Once you find a relevant article, you'll still need to get a copy of it from the library. (Readers Guide is not full text.) Go to IUCAT and do an Exact Search by the title of the magazine (NOT the title of the article). Example:

Finding scholarly books or articles about Prague, 1941-1968
Search IUCAT for books. You can use Exact Search and try these subject headings:
world war 1939-1945 czechoslovakia
czechoslovakia history 1938-1945
czechoslovakia history 1945-1992
but your results will be mostly in Czech (and Slovak). So unless you can read Czech or Slovak, you might want to do an Advanced Search and limit your results to English only, like this:

To find scholarly articles, try Academic Search Premier and Historical Abstracts, a database of historical journals. Like IUCAT, Historical Abstracts has items in many languages, so use the Advanced Search and limit your results to English only.

Finding video footage of the events mentioned in the article "Image as Memorial"
Here are the titles of videos with original footage:
  1. The Assassination of JFK
  2. The Rodney King incident
Search IUCAT for availability. (See Week One tips for searching for movies in IUCAT). Don't panic if you can't find them in IUCAT: you can always ask at the desk in the Kent Cooper Room. Note: Video of footage of the Challenger disaster is not available in the library at this time.
