ILINK Areas for Review and Fix -- January 2003 Unicorn Upgrade

FIX FOR MARCH 2003 WHEN WEBCAT IS UPGRADED TO VERSION 2002
  • Create Programming So That Patron Message Can Bring Up a Popup Window
This will help us to meet the needs of both users and public services staff who need to understand where a book charged to an unusual current location actually is. An example is Brittle Books Program. Where is the book? How can I get it? This message box will let us put in more useful information. There are both policy and technical issues involved. The technical issue revolves around the problems with the popup window not working when there are multiple copies of an item. We need to figure out exactly in what circumstances this will be used and determine policies for its use. This is a high priority for March.
  • Reserve Bibliographic Record Screens Need to Have Copy and Call Record Changes
Materials on reserve do not give enough information. It needs to look more like what the regular call/copy information looks like. We need to add the following headers, in addition to the way Library displays: Copies, Circulation Rule, Reserve Desk, and Location, if that is at all possible. Update and Notes 10-4-02 This one did not work quite the way we had hoped it would work. Unfortunately, it seems to have worked the way ILINK works and it is going to cause problems because of our shared records. We had asked that "Location" be added so that we could show the regular current location for materials in other libraries on this list that are not on reserver. That does not seem to have happened. We will have to look at this for the Janaury upgrade to see if we can display "current location." Update 12-11-02 SIRSI will (we think) fix this in version 0.16 that we will implement in March.
  • Popup Window Does Not Display for Items Charged to Carrel When There are Multiple Copies
We decided at the September 18 Tech Meeting that we will investigate this further for January. In September we coded the system not to highlight the link (so that it brings up a popup box) if there is no barcode for one or more of the items. It is possible that version 0.16 that we will be given to test by SIRSI in January will fix this problem. We will wait for March on this one.
  • No Copies Available in Any Library and Change Display
The wording on title lists was changed in September to give more information and to remove the cryptic shelving location. One change was left undone, however. The Change Display screens need to add back the ability to change the library that displays. Specifications
  • Default libraries and Persistence -- Bloomington Modem Pool IP Problems Most users of the Bloomington modem pool see the remote access screen. This should not happen.
IP Addresses for September 2002 (rev.9-24-2002)
WERBSERVER IDs for September 2002 (rev.9-24-2002)
In addition, we need to get the IP ranges for VPN on the various campuses.
  • Set Up My Account So That Users with Social Security Numbers in UITS Records and 999 Numbers in Registrar Records Can Use It. We were to check with the Registrar about how this would work and John plans to see if we can actually look for multiple records when a user has more than one.
  • On the Print/Email/Save Screen Users See, the Bibliographic Records Are Mashed Together with No Line Between Them
SIRSI's demo ILINK page displays include blank lines between records. Update 12-26-02: Now the screens have extra blank lines, but there are blank lines between entries. Everyone has agreed to keep it with the extra blank lines for now and to review again when Unicorn 2002 is loaded to see how or if the new version of ILINK fixed this problem.
  • IUCAT Copyright Statement on IUCAT Pages
We need to add an IU copyright statement to each screen. We need to add to the ILINK graphic. NOTE: We will need to redo this statement when we load the 2002 version in March to use a 2003 copyright date.
  • IUPUI Libraries Need to Use IUCAT as a Source for SFX
We need to work with librarians at Indianapolis and with John Eiszner of IUPUI University Library to develop a way for IUPUI to use the catalog as a source for SFX. This is now in test on one of the test machines. Waiting for IP addresses from IUPUI. The test SFX button works. John, if you don't get IP addresses, let's use the ones from IUCAT defaults.

CHANGES FOR MAY 2003 UPGRADE
  • Hypertext Links on Reserve Bibliographic Records
Hypertext links on bibliographic records in the Reserve Module are a different font and much larger than the font on the rest of the bibliographic record. Details
  • "More with These Subject Headings" Button Needs to Be Redesigned
The button labeled "More with These Subject Headings" does not show up properly. We need to try one of the following methds to make it show up better. 1st priority: Insert it between the end of the bibliographic record and the holdings. If that cannot be done, the button needs to be redesigned to be two lines so that it can stand out more. Update 12-23-02: This was moved to the bottom of the screen, the best we can do. We don't have a consensus on whether to put at the left, middle or right, so we will leave it on the right for now.
  • Reserve Title Hit Lists Need to Look Like Other Hit Lists
Reserve hit list ws modified to look like the regular hit lists for other kinds of searches with the exception of the call number. Only one more thing still needs to be done: The display button should go in with the display of holding library. This is especially important where there are multiple copies and the wording on the screen says "(View for detail)" Those words should be replaced by the Display button. Our button does not say "view."
  • Change "Words or Phrase" at top of Basic Hit List and Bibliographic Record Displays
When a user does a Keyword or Exact (Basic) Search using the Keyword Anywhere button, the hit list and the bibliographic records resulting from this search still say "words or phrase" instead of "Keyword Anywhere" as the Advanced Keyword search results do. The text and the button should match. Details
  • Mouse-over Graphics
The mouse-over graphic alternations (lit vs. unlit) for the buttons on the root bar (IUCAT Home / My Account / Comments / etc.) do not work.
  • URL Button Is Broken on Class Reserve Hit Lists Screens Whenever a course includes electronic resources available through the web, the catalog displays a "URL available" button. The link to the graphic is broken and the button does not display.
  • On the Print/Email/Save Screen Users See, the Bibliographic Records Are Mashed Together with No Line Between Them
SIRSI's demo ILINK page displays include blank lines between records. Update 12-23-02: Now the screens have extra blank lines, but there are blank lines between entries.
  • Too Many Search/Reset Buttons on Basic Search Revise Search Screen
Sometimes a user does a basic keyword search and decides that he or she needs to make the library limit broader or narrower. He or she clicks the Revise Search button or scrolls down, then changes one or more limits. The user should be using the Keyword Anywhere, Author, Title, etc. buttons to complete the search. There are two additional buttons on this screen at the bottom of the revise search section. The Reset button acts like a Search button. The Search button just does a Keywords Anywhere search. Please REMOVE the Search and Reset buttons at the bottom of this Revise section. As we move into March, we should determine whether we should just put the Keywords Anywhere, Author, Title, etc. buttons at the bottom of the list as well. bottom of the list as well. Update 12-23-02: John had earlier removed both the Search and Reset buttons, but when we tested in late December, the fix seems to have disappeared.
  • Remove Revise Search Button from Hit List Screens When a Search Has Been Redirected or Add Revise Search Capability When a user does a search and finds a bibliographic record, he or she can click on a subject heading or other link in the record to do a new search using that heading. When the new list of search results displays, the hit list screen includes a Revise Search button. When the user clicks on that button, he or she is taken to the bottom of the first screen, but there is no place to revise the search. We need to figure out a way to either remove the Revise Search buttons from that screen or put Revise Search capabilities on these screens. Update 12-26-02: Basic Keyword Search Revise search button now takes users to the revise search capability when the user has redirected a search on the BASIC keyword searches from a hypertext link in a bibliographic record. This does not, however, happen when the users has clicked on a link from the Limit Your Search Results box on a BASIC Keyword Search.
Advanced Keyword Search The change does not work at all for Advanced Searches. In an ADVANCED Keyword Search, when a user redirects a search by clicking on a hypertext link in the bibliogrpaphic record OR in the Limit Your Search Results box, the user gets to a screen where there is a "Revise" button, but it does not take the user anywhere. It just takes the user to the bottom of the screen. No revise functionality is available here.
  • Create Group ID Functionality for My Account
My Account functions do not take into account the group ID functions used by Dentistry and Bloomington Law to check materials our to their own borrowers. Materials checked out on such a group ID do not display on My Account screens and users cannot renew them online.
Approved by Bloomington Law, Indianapolis Dentistry, and Circulation Working Group chairs as of 12-15-02
Update 12-26-02: There are two problems. One is more major than the other. Major: The new buttons do not take the user back to the same place as in the production site because we have changed the programming. When I log on to My Account, as a user with a single record OR as a user with multiple records, I get a screen with 3 buttons. This is good. When I click on Renew My Materials or Review My Materials, I see the correct screens. That is also good. On BOTH the Renew screen and the Review screen, if I click on the "Go Back" button, I am taken back to a screen that has only one button on it: Logout. I don't get back to a screen that allows me to review and to renew. That is because the computer cannot find my account information. It looks as though the Go Back button on these two screens will have to be programmed to act as a regular "Back" button on a browser. Update 1-3-02 Only the bottom button on the Renew screen is still having problems.
The new red buttons do not have ALT tags. The following buttons are without ALT tags: 1) On the first login screen, the new LOGIN button does not have an ALT tag. 2) On the screen that displays after I have logged in NOTE of the new red buttons include ALT tags: Review My Account, Renew My Materials, Logout of My Account. We need multiple ALT tags when the user sees multiple buttons. 3) On the Renew My Materials screen, there are no ALT tags for "Renew Selected Items" or "Review My Account." "Clear Selections" does have ALT tags. 4) On the Review My Account Screen, there is no ALT tag for "Renew Items." Update 1-2-03 Still missing ALT tags for a screen with multiple accounts on #2. On #3, the Renew button still needs an ALT tag.
  • Limit Your Search to These Categories Boxes Need Decision and Revision
We seem not to be getting all the headings that other libraries (e.g., BYU) see. We will need to investigate more with SIRSI. In addition, the OPAC Advisory Committee need to make some decisions: 1) whether we will keep these boxes at all and 2) if we keep the boxes, we will need to change the wording of some of the category descriptions. John says this is simply a file we can replace periodically.
  • Implement Search History
  • Change Display Selection Does Not Persist.
The Change Display selection used to persist in the web catalog until the user changed it. Now it changes any time a user goes to the Keyword or Exact screen, even if the user uses the "Go Back" button that is supposed to retain such choices.
