Lilly Library holdings include about 400,000 books, more than 100,000 pieces of sheet music, and more than 7.5 million manuscripts. Access to these items is provided through IUCAT, the card catalog, and other finding aids both printed and online.
See the Guide to the collections for a general description of the Library's holdings in selected subject areas.
IUCAT is the best place to begin a search for specific materials in the Lilly Library. See links to other online resources in the menu to the left.
Some finding aids are not online. These include:
Located in the Lilly Library reading room, the card catalog provides author, title, and subject access to books not yet listed online in IUCAT.
Located in the Lilly Library reading room, this card file provides detailed name and subject indexing for approximately 20% of the Library's manuscript collections.
Special card files:
A chronological file, shelf-list, and special files for provenance, association, printers and presses, book bindings and binders and uncataloged maps and prints are available for use. Ask Library staff for assistance.
Exhibition & miscellaneous catalogues:
Published catalogues may be used to browse the collections thematically. Copies of the catalogues are available in the Lilly Library reading room and other IU Libraries collections. Many are still available for purchase. See the Catalogues page for a list.
Indiana University Bookman:
Published irregularly from 1956 through 1988, many issues function as a guide to particular Library collections. See the Bookman page for a list of the contents of each issue.
