Bloomington Library Faculty Council Meeting
Wednesday, July 7, 2004, 3:00-5:00 p.m.

1. Welcome new members and appointment of replacement for Jagodzinski

Note: This was a joint meeting of the current and incoming councils. Cecile Jagodzinski is the newly elected representative from Unit 12 to the Bloomington Faculty Council and will assume her position on BLFC as the liaison to BFC for 2004-2005. Suzanne Mudge will join the 2004-2005 BLFC, serving out the second year of Jagodzinski's two year term.

2. The minutes of the June 2 meeting were approved as amended.

3. Election of Secretary of BLFC, Secretary of BLF, and Parliamentarian.

Nonie Watt was nominated for the position of BLFC Secretary and was elected unanimously.

Frank Quinn was nominated for the position of Secretary of BLF and was elected unanimously.

Elizabeth Johnson volunteered to be Parliamentarian of the BLF and BLFC and was elected unanimously.

4. Selection of council members to serve on IULFC

Dowell reviewed the situation of the composition of Bloomington representation on IULFC, referring to a document "Proposal to address problem with composition of Bloomington representation" July 14, 2003. We are in the 2nd year of the cycle described in that document. Marion Frank-Wilson, out-going IULFC Secretary, explained the commitments of IULFC membership. Becky Cape will serve a special one year term on IULFC in 2004-2005. Jake Nadal volunteered to serve a two year term 2004-2006 and the Council selected Suzanne Mudge (pending her agreement) as the other Bloomington representative 2004-2006.

5. Election Committee Report

Cape reported that the ballot on the change in the Collection Development Committee charge passed. The election of the IULFC Faculty Review Board Bloomington representatives must be conducted before the Fall.

6. Appointment of BLFC Committees and Liaisons

Members of the Council reviewed the recommendations for 2004-2006 committee membership from the Election Committee based on the Survey of Committee Preferences, made some changes and additional appointments, and selected liaisons and chairs. The draft committee selections are as follows:

Council liaisons are to contact the chairs designate and new members of their committees and verify that they are willing to serve. Dowell will confirm that the IULFC committee nominations agreed on by BLFC at the Mary 2004 meeting had gone forward.

7. Report of the Peer Review Committee

The document "Report on Peer Review Committee Activities 2003-2004" from the Peer Review Committee was discussed. The Council focused on the area of performance and whether the three levels were adequate for judging merit. The report will be posted on the BLFC website. The Council asked the Faculty Standards Committee to review the report as in past years and bring anything needing Council attention forward.

8. Dean's report

Hemmassi reported for Dean Thorin. There are currently three positions open: Associate Director of Projects and Services (Digital Library Program), Life Sciences/Chemistry Librarian, and the Puzzle Curator (half time, Lilly Library). Interviews were underway for the Associate Director of Projects and Services (Digital Library Program). Frank Quinn, Chair of the Search and Screen Committee for the Life Sciences/Chemistry Librarian said that the goal is to hire someone into that position before the start of the Fall Semester. The Search and Screen Committee, chaired by Joel Silver, for the Puzzle Curator has begun meeting.

Several new appointees will begin have either begun their new jobs or will in August.

Jenn Riley began as Metadata Librarian on July 1. Carolyn Walters will begin as Director for Public Services on August 1. Virginia Sojdehei will begin as Human Resources Librarian in early August. Phil Ponella will begin as Director of the Music Library on August 18.

After discussions with COAS and within the libraries it has been decided to go ahead and recruit for the position of International Studies Librarian. Funded by Commitment to Excellence money, this position will focus on outreach to undergraduates in the new International Studies Major.

There was no news about who would be the new Dean of the Faculties. The new head of the Indiana University Press is Janet Rabinowitz.
