On January 1, 1996, one of the longest standing members of the former Cataloging Department, Dorothy Niekamp (IUB), officially entered retirement. Dorothy began her academic appointment as Cataloger for Western European Studies on September 21, 1966. For almost thirty years she continued in that position, though in later years she added the difficult area of vernacular Africana to her cataloging repertoire.
As her career progressed, Dorothy expanded her interest in Africana cataloging to service on numerous related committees in the American Library Association. She also turned her beloved hobby of piloting an airplane into a professional activity via her publication and research for the "Ninety-Nines," an organization of women pilots.
Please join me in wishing Dorothy many successful years in retirement. Her legacy is the thousands of cataloging records, both in IUCAT and OCLC, that she contributed over her many years of service to the IU Libraries.
