1. IN HONOR OF THE IUB LIBRARIES 1994 RETIREES...
Lois Ferree
Lois joined the Serials Department in 1979 as Senior Serials
Assistant Financial Records.
During these many years, Lois Ferree wore two professional hats
and she wore them in style. The demands of these two hats,
actually, greatly complemented each other. One was dedicated to
her responsibilities in the Serials department and the other was
dedicated to her love of "physical exercise".
The implementation of the NOTIS Serials Control subsystem meant
performing all accounting functions in an online environment. It
was Lois' thought that she would retire before this
implementation and not get involved in such drastic changes.
Instead, she stayed, participated in the development of policies
and procedures and promptly developed significant expertise in
working in IUCAT.
Lois took advantage of her strong organizational and analytical
skills to make a smooth transition from one system to another.
In an area where the consequence of error in serial expenditures
is significant, her ability to process detailed, complex work
with extreme accuracy continued to provide accurate financial
reports.
However, Lois was more than an expert in serials work. She also
carefully mixed business with pleasure. Except for extremely
rare occasions, Lois took long walks at every break, every lunch
time, every day. She was the admiration of us all, but she never
was quite successful as a role model to incite the rest of us to
follow her example faithfully.... In addition, Lois and her
husband, Herbert, are inveterate hikers. I would not be
surprised if they have not hiked every single trail in the
Colorado Rockies and the Smokies.
It was not easy to accept Lois' retirement. Indeed, a superb
staff member and a good friend was leaving. It was also
recognized, however, that she had well earned her retirement and
that her family, children and grandchildren....and the mountains
were waiting for her. We wish her the best and hope that she
will continue to come and visit us.
--Odette Shepherd, Head, Serials
Joseph Lin
Joseph Chieh Lin has been cataloging science materials for the
Indiana University Libraries for more than twenty years. He has
seen and been involved in tremendous growth and change during
those twenty years. The technological developments that have
influenced the operations of the University and the activities of
faculty and students have especially impacted the technical
services areas of the Libraries, and cataloging is one of the
areas most affected. Librarians such as Joe have been at the
forefront in planning and managing changing library processes and
services. It is a testimony to Joe Lin's career as a librarian
that he was an integral and important part of the Indiana
University Libraries during this period of great change. He has
made valuable contributions to the research and studies of
students and faculty of the University through his cataloging
activities.
Joe has a strong academic background in science as well as
expertise in several languages, and his unique skills have
contributed greatly to his career in the Indiana University
Libraries. Joe received a bachelor of science degree in physics
from National Taiwan Normal University in 1962, with a major in
physics and a minor in chemistry. A short time later, in 1968,
he received a master of science degree in chemical physics from
the University of Guelph, Ontario. From 1968 to 1972, he did
doctoral work in astrophysics and geophysics at the University of
Western Ontario. Joe's commitment to academic development has
continued throughout his tenure at Indiana University. In 1984,
he received a specialist degree from the Indiana University
School of Library and Information Science. Even as he approached
retirement, he continued his education. He is currently working
on his doctorate in library and information science. His work
toward that degree is now focused on his dissertation.
Before beginning his career as a librarian, Joe was a teacher.
He was assistant lecturer at Taiwan Normal University, where he
taught physics; he taught in the Department of Mathematics and
Physics at the University of Guelph; and he taught in the
Department of Geophysics and the Department of Physics at the
University of Western Ontario.
In the early 1970s, Joe decided on a career in librarianship, and
he earned a master of library science degree from the School of
Library and Information Science at the University of Western
Ontario in 1973. He received a Specialist Degree in Library and
Information Science from the Indiana University School of Library
and Information Science in 1984. Joe joined the staff of the
Indiana University Libraries in January of 1974 as an affiliate
librarian, and in 1978 he was promoted to associate librarian.
He has been a science cataloger throughout his career at Indiana
University.
As a cataloger for the Indiana University Libraries, Joe has been
responsible for cataloging an incredible range of scientific
materials, including materials in astronomy, astrophysics,
biochemistry, biophysics, chemistry, computer science,
engineering, geology, geophysics, mathematics, physics, general
science, statistics, and technology. He has worked closely with
staffs in the Chemistry, Geology, and Swain Hall Libraries and
has always been eager to share both his knowledge in science and
his skills in librarianship. His colleagues in the Libraries'
Cataloging Department have benefitted from his enthusiasm in
sharing his expertise in the cataloging and classification of
science materials. Because books in the sciences so often focus
on new applications, theories, or methodologies, subject analysis
in these areas can be challenging and difficult. Joe, however,
has been successful in combining his scientific background and
his skills in librarianship to provide appropriate subject access
for researchers and students.
Joe is interested in both the theoretical and practical
applications of cataloging and classification and has published
many articles on these topics. His continuing interest in
computer science resulted in a work entitled Computer Crime,
Security, and Privacy: A Selected Bibliography, which was
published in 1979.
In addition to his writing and research, Joe contributes to the
profession through his involvement in a number of professional
associations. He is a member of the American Library
Association, the Special Libraries Association, the American
Society for Information Science, the Association for Library and
Information Science Education, and the Chinese-American
Librarians Association; he has served on many committees of these
associations. He attends conferences and has participated in a
variety of continuing education activities. During his twenty
years as a librarian, Joe has contributed to the Indiana
University Libraries and to the University through his service on
numerous committees. He has served as an elected member of the
Bloomington Libraries' Faculty Council.
As an emeritus librarian, Joe plans to continue his work toward
his doctorate and to continue his research activities. His
colleagues in the I.U. Libraries wish him a happy and productive
retirement as he looks forward to spending more time with his
wife Caroline and his children Margaret, Michael, and Anna.

Wilma Livingston
In May, 1973, Wilma began working at IU in the Continuing
Education Department, which later became the School of Continuing
Studies. She remained in that position until October 1988 when
she began working in the Library in the Information and Document
Delivery Services Department. That department is now known as
Access Services. Before her employment with IU, she worked
several years as an instructor at the Bloomington Beauty School.
Wilma loves working on her house and spending time with her
grandchildren. In 1993, she took a three month leave from her
job at the Library to help care for her handicapped grandchild.
She is involved in church work, making crafts, yard work and
gardening, and helping her husband in his projects. Wilma never
lacks for something to do.
Wilma has many talents, among them cake decorating and floral
arrangement. Also, in the late 70's, with help from her daughter
and parents, Wilma built the house that she now lives in. They
accomplished this task in only two years by working nights,
weekends and holidays and on Wilma's salary from IU.
After being single for more than 30 years, Wilma began dating Bud
Livingston in 1991. Wilma and Bud had been engaged for a short
time as teenagers. On February 15, 1992, Wilma and Bud were
married. Bud enjoys planning vacations and he and Wilma have
plans for much traveling in the future.

Lois Selk
Lois Selk worked in the Optometry Library from 1970 until 1994,
which means that she served in the capacity of Branch
Coordinator for nearly 25 years. She was hired and trained by
Elizabeth Egan -- a name that may be familiar to many readers --
and over the years Lois herself trained eight or nine separate
head librarians.
Lois is the principal reason that the Optometry Library is in
such good condition today. The consistency brought about by
her long service here has precluded the false starts and
constant training that are customary when there is frequent
staff turnover. The characteristics that she demonstrated at
work include: dedication, loyalty, intelligence, unrelenting
hard work, and especially the ability to stay unruffled under
pressure.
Thousands of optometry students and hundreds of optometry faculty
over the years owe much to Lois' service. As testimony to the
esteem in which she is held by the School of Optometry she was
the winner of the Foley House Basement Door Key for 1994. The
award is made annually to persons deserving special recognition
for their roles in the school's development and is usually made
to a prominent faculty member or administrator. Lois is the
only non-optometrist to win the award in its twenty-year history.
Lois intends to devote much of her time to her hobbies (she
collects angels, candlesticks, and Victorian fobs), and she
spends several days per week working on church activities. She
also enjoys working in her garden (translated: moving rocks
from one place to another and then back again) and in traveling
to visit her grandchildren.
The School of Optometry and the Library thank Lois for her nearly
quarter century of devoted service, and we wish her well during
her retirement.
--Doug Freeman, Head, Optometry Library

6. PRESERVATION MICROFILMING CONSULTANT VISITS IUL-BLOOMINGTON
"Commitment to preservation microfilming is not a commitment to a
dying technology," stated Eileen Usovicz, preservation
microfilming expert, during her presentation at the Main Library
on Friday, May 26. Ms. Usovicz, who has 15 years experience in
the field, used slides and sample materials to illustrate her
talk. She stated that the goal of preservation microfilming,
which distinguishes it from records filming, is to produce the
highest quality permanent record of a document or publication.
She described the painstaking process of producing high quality
images, from selecting appropriate equipment and film stock to
calibrating, shooting, inspecting and adhering to stringent
standards for film processing and image standards. Preservation
microfilm, properly stored, will last over 500 years, and the
images may be reproduced with little blurriness. The high
quality of the filmed image makes preservation microfilm the
ideal source document for digital scanning. Pilot projects
indicate that scanning microfilm is faster, less expensive and
gives a better image than scanning paper documents. Other
current research is devoted to developing processes for producing
continuous tone microfilm images, for treating film with
polysulfide to prevent damage to the image, and for creating a
permanent color microfilm.
During her two-day visit, Ms. Usovicz also met with librarians
and staff in the Preservation Department, the IU Archives and the
Lilly Library, and toured microfilming facilities at IU
Communication Services and the Indiana Historical Society. Ms.
Usovicz is preparing a report with the will provide guidance to
the Libraries toward the development of preservation microfilming
capability for both general and special collections materials.
