1. THANKS FROM BIOLOGY LIBRARY

Those who attended last week's Biology Library Open House were able to see the many changes which have taken place there over the last year. It remains only to thank those individuals who helped with them:

Eddie Bullard, Robert Gowin, Ron Hafft, Sherri Hillenburg, Dennis McGreer, Vaughn Nuest and staff, Steven Sowell, Pat Steele, Melissa Stewart, and Ed Stockey.

--Elizabeth Hanson, Acting Head, Biology Library

2. FACULTY/STAFF NEWS

Dolores Hoyt has been appointed as Associate Executive Director II of the IUPUI University Libraries effective March 19, 1996. Dolores has served as Head of Technical Services at University Libraries since 1984. She has been with University Libraries since 1977.

Effective April 19 Peggy Peck resigned her position as Purchasing and Accounting Control Coordinator in MPS.

Frances Wilhoit has been awarded the Eleanor Blum Award for Distinguished Service to Mass Communication (AEJMC). This award, named after the first recipient and a mentor of Frances Wilhoit, has been given only four times since its inception in 1980. It recognizes Frances' contributions to Journalism and mass communication scholars through her own work as a scholar and bibliographer. The award will be presented at the annual AEJMC meeting in August in Anaheim, California. Congratulations Frances!

Heidi Detrick, current SLIS Branch Coordinator, will be reassigned to IOCM and retrospective conversion assignments beginning May 6. As a result of the reorganization of the SLIS Library, which has occurred over the past two years there no longer is a need for the Branch Coordinator responsibilities in SLIS as currently described. The continuing high priority of retrospective conversion makes her reassignment to that effort most appropriate and valuable for the Libraries.

3. InULA BOOK SALE A SUCCESS

The InULA Book Sale, which occurred April 21-22, netted close to $3000 this year. InULA uses this money to fund its scholarship and research incentive grants programs. Many library staff, SLIS students, and others invested a tremendous amount of time, effort, and muscle into the Sale. Special thanks goes to the Book Sale Committee members--Mary Krutulis, Celestina Wroth, Andrea Morrison, Nonie Watt, and Kris Markovich--who all persevered through the months of preparation and hard work that go into the Sale. (It should be noted that Kris and Celestina are SLIS students, and took on Book Sale work on top of their classes and their paid jobs.)

We are also grateful to all those who volunteered to haul, sort, pack, haul, unpack, sell, repack, haul, and clean up during the sale: Duncan Stewart, Frank Quinn, Lewis Johnson, Erika Dowell, Emily Okada, Dawn Quillen, Mita Wilsey Glass, Paula Meadows, Pamela Glimm, Jane Van Auken, Mark Day, Ruth Davison, Pat Steele, Tabib Ghaffari, Marjorie Jeffers, Sylvia Turchyn, Julie Su (who drove down from Indianapolis to help out), and others whose names I was not able to record. Thanks also to Lou Malcomb, Mary Popp, and Vaughn Nuest for not only their assistance, but the use of their space, equipment and staff. And, finally, thanks to all those who donated books and other items for sale, and those who came and spent money! Look for next year's sale in April during National Library Week.

--Lorraine Olley, Head, Preservation Department

6. NEWS FROM THE EAST ASIAN LIBRARY

The East Asian Collection has received a Multi-Volume Set Grant from NCC (National Coordinating Committee on Japanese Library Resources) to buy a 100-volume set of rare source materials on Japanese educational history, entitled Oraimono Taikei, published by Ozorasha in Tokyo, 1992-1994. (Total cost for the set is around $15,000, of which 75% will be paid by the Grant.) Indiana is one of the 12 East Asian libraries to receive such awards this year. Each title entry proposed by these libraries is, according to NCC criteria, for a multi-volume set which has not been owned in North America by more than three libraries. The Oraimono Taikei at Indiana (after we purchase it with the grant) will be either the second or third copy of the set in the country. This set complements several other large series sets we have purchased in recent years in this subject area mostly with grants.
