The IU Libraries 1995-96 White Award Committee is pleased to announce that Margaret Harter, Head of Information Services at the Kinsey Institute, IU Bloomington, is the recipient of this year's Herbert F. and Virginia White Professional Development Award. Employees of IU Libraries on all of IU's regional campuses are encouraged to apply for the award. 4. WYLIE HOUSE OPENS TOUR SEASON
Wylie House Museum opens its 1996 tour season on Saturday, March 2, from 10 AM to 4 PM with a Seed Sale aimed at inspiring local gardeners to grow heirloom varieties and teaching them to save their own seeds. At 11AM and 2PM, Curator Bonnie Williams will present hour-long classes for adults on how to save seeds. A 30-minute session for kids will start at 1 PM and will present basic ideas about seed saving and biodiversity with fun activities and stories. (Seed swappers are asked to bring seeds that have been properly stored, labelled, and not more than two years old.) The information table with heirloom gardening books, seed-saving manuals, and catalogs from heirloom seed suppliers will prove helpful to beginning gardeners and veterans alike. 8. NEW EXHIBIT AND RECEPTION ANNOUNCEMENT
The Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis University Libraries, in cooperation with Adaptive Educational Services has announced the presentation of an art exhibit sponsored by Very Special Arts Indiana, a non profit organization dedicated to education through quality arts experiences, advocacy for children with disabilities and their peers in inclusive environments, and access to the arts for all individuals. The exhibit, entitled Colors of the Wild, is available free-of-charge to the public from February 12 through March 8, 1996, in the Level One Lobby of the IUPUI University Library, located at 755 W. Michigan Street.
The Colors of the Wild program was established as a collaborative project of Very Special Arts Indiana and the Indianapolis Zoo, designed to heighten the awareness of children about global environmental concerns, including endangered animal species. The name of the program originated from a painting by California artist Paul Andrew Bean, who joined over 200 students representing 20 schools from throughout Indiana in a variety of arts disciplines for an exhibit and performance at the Indianapolis Zoo in May 1995.
In 1996, the program will be represented through a traveling exhibit, promotional merchandise and educational kits. The exhibit features 20 pieces of artwork created by students from the participating schools and three limited edition prints by Paul Andrew Bean. A selection of the student art is replicated on post cards, note cards and T-shirts which are available for purchase, with all proceeds benefiting Very Special Arts Indiana programs. The learning kits that accompany the exhibit will assist students to explore environmental themes, and teaching materials provide access for children with disabilities.
The IUPUI Adaptive Educational Services program provides assistance to IUPUI students in achieving their educational goals through notetaking, interpreting, reading and technology support for dexterity, visually and hearing impaired students. The University Libraries support these efforts by providing an Adaptive Educational Service Center in its facilities.
On Friday, February 23, from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m., a public reception will be held at the site of the Colors of the Wild exhibit. While viewing the exhibit, patrons will have access to information about the programs and services of Very Special Arts Indiana and the IUPUI University Library and Adaptive Educational Services.
For further information about the IUPUI University Library exhibit hours, call 278-0232. Additional programs and services information for Very Special Arts Indiana may be received by calling 253-5504, and IUPUI Adaptive Educational Services by calling 274-3241.
