On July 2, 1997 Clay Housholder gave notice of his resignation from the IU Libraries. He has accepted a Reference Librarian position at Northwest Christian College in Eugene Oregon. Clay's last day as an employee of Indiana University will be Monday July, 21.
Lorraine Olley's article, "Approaches for Preservation Education in Academic Libraries," and Richard Vaughan's case study, "Preservation Awareness Campaigns at the Indiana University Libraries--Bloomington," appear in Promoting Preservation Awareness in Libraries, edited by Jeanne Drewes and Julie Page, and published by Greenwood Press in June 1997.
Effective June 24, Jason Baumgartner accepted the Assistant Stacks Supervisor position in Customer and Facilities Services. Jason has worked in C&FS as a student hourly employee since January 15, 1996 and is currently enrolled at IU in the field of Political Science.

All IUB Library Employees: Please plan on attending the Indiana University Libraries Annual Family Picnic on Thursday, July 17, 1997 from 11:30-2:30 PM at Bryan Park. Lunch is provided for those who RSVP (Fried Chicken/Vegetarian Selection, Salads, Veggies, Fruits, and Soft drinks).
Bring your favorite games (lawn games, board games, cards, etc.), chairs and blankets. Swimming (at a bargain price) if enough people sign up. Feel free to show off your culinary talents with your colleagues by bringing a side dish, a dessert, or a treat to share.
The special events committee is working hard to plan the best picnic ever, so come join the fun. If you are planning to join us for lunch, it is essential that you RSVP by JULY 11, 1997 so we can plan for the appropriate amount of food.

4. WORKSHOP ON AREA LIBRARIANSHIP IN HIGHER EDUCATION: DEFINING THE FUTURE
This workshop sponsored by the Indiana University Libraries and funded by Indiana University's U.S Department of Education Title VI funded programs for African, East Asian, Inner Asian and Uralic, Russian and East European, and West European Studies will be held on July 18-19 at the University Place Conference Center and Hotel on the Indianapolis campus of Indiana University. The workshop will build on the Conference on the Future of Area Librarianship which was held in July l995. The invited participants include officers of area librarian organizations and members of the library and scholarly communities. The sessions of the workshop will focus on three interrelated issues: reconnecting to scholarship, roles and functions of area librarians, and recruiting and educating area librarians.

5. WORKSHOP IN MUSIC CATALOGING
Ralph Papakhian and Sue Stancu conducted a week long Workshop in Music Cataloging, June 23-27, at the Cook Music Library. The ten participants in the workshop came from Greece, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Ohio, and North Dakota. The workshop included tours of the Archives of Traditional Music (Suzanne Mudge) , and the Lilly Library (Stephen Cape), and a demonstration of the Variations Project (Jon Dunn). Our thanks to these individuals for helping to make the workshop a success.

6. A VISITOR FROM SOUTH AFRICA
Welna van Eeden, Librarian at the Technical Services Division, Samuel Pauw Library, University of South Africa, Pretoria visited the IUB Libraries Monday, June 30th. Tours were provided by Ralph Papakhian (Cook Music Library), Suzanne Mudge (Archives of Traditional Music) and Colleen Talty (Media and Reserves Services).
Ms. Van Eeden's primary area of interest is the processing of audio-visual materials.
