4. TRUSTEE ELECTION UPDATE

We need more counters for this year's IU Alumni Trustee Election. As you may remember, the election is held on Saturday (sorry about that -- its exact date is actually mandated by Indiana law), June 29th in the Main Library Media Showing Room. The pay is $7.00 per hour and the election usually takes at least 4 hours.

Before we offer the remaining positions to student employees, I'd like to give the library support staff one last chance to volunteer. If you would like to count ballots in this year's election, please respond to me via e-mail to Smith6. Thank you.

--Lynn Smith

5. N I S O ISSUES GUIDELINES FOR STORAGE OF PAPER RECORDS

The National Information Standards Organization has issued as the first in its Technical Report Series, "Environmental Guidelines for the Storage of Paper Records" (NISO TR01-1995). This document "addresses boundary conditions for temperature, relative humidity, light, airborne particulates, and gaseous contaminants in storage of paper-based records in libraries and archives."

The report includes "basic information on the effect of the environment on records and makes recommendations for general situations." For example, for open stack libraries it recommends a maximum temperature of 70 F and 30%-50% relative humidity. Although it is not a standard, this publication may be useful to those who are planning new library construction, renovation of existing spaces, or offsite storage of library materials. Please contact me (olley@indiana.edu) if you would like to review the report, or want information about ordering it. You may also contact NISO at nisohq@cni.org. --Lorraine Olley, Head, Preservation Department
