1. Staff News

Effective November 27, Elaine Hehner resigned from her position as SALC Office Coordinator.

Effective November 30, Larime Wilson accepted the Coordinator of Outdoor Interpretation position in the Wylie House. Larime has worked hourly at the Wylie House as Garden Interpreter since March of 1996.

Gary Wiggins's article "Chemistry on the Internet: The Library on Your Computer" was published in the November/December 1998 issue of the Journal of Chemical Information and Computer Sciences (v. 38 no. 6). It was one of 9 invited articles published in a special section of the issue devoted to the 50th anniversary of the American Chemical Society's Division of Chemical Information.

Jim Baldwin, Associate Librarian and Resource Development Team Leader at IUPUI University Libraries, is the co-author of an essay on "Approval Plans and Approval Vendor Selection in an Outsourcing Environment," published in the current issue of Library Acquisitions: Practice & Theory (Vol. 22, no. 4 [1998]).

2. Notes Of Thanks

On November 11, the Chemistry Library suffered another flood in the bound journals area. Approximately 500 volumes were wet, some them soaked through. Thanks are due to all who helped with the cleanup and salvage operation, especially Jo Burgess, Head of Conservation Services. My greatest thanks, however, go to the Chemistry Library staff, who once again managed to save every volume that was damaged by water.

The Life Sciences Library had a planning and cleaning party on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. One of our objectives was to remove or discard items that were no longer needed. We made fantastic progress in a remarkably short period of time. In addition, we identified many repairs that need to be made to the library and other projects that will be addressed over the coming months. Thanks to Matt Myers and the Libraries moving crew for helping with this effort and a special thanks to the Life Sciences Library staff for pitching in with such enthusiasm!

--Gary Wiggins, Head, Chemistry Library; Acting Head, Life Sciences Library

3. Librarians' Day 1999 Program Ideas

The date for the next Librarians' Day has not been definitely set, but the Committee is interested in hearing your programming ideas nonetheless. Some ideas we are currently kicking around include ...

How to procure & managing endowments and gifts; Digital Libraries Team: how do they envision a project & put it together?; Copyright issues (e.g., the new Digital Millennium Copyright Act)

Are you interested in any or all of these topics?

What are some other topics that we might explore?

Please send all comments and suggestions to Chris Long at 274-1930 or celong2@iupui.edu, or contact one of the other committee members below.

The 1999 IULFC Librarians' Day Committee is:

Chris Long (IUPUI)

If you're scheduling a meeting and want to avoid conflicts, consulting the master calendar may help.
