*Distributed Education Advisory Committee formed for the IUB Libraries

The IUB Libraries' Distributed Education Advisory Committee will work closely with the Reference Department and the Distributed Education Library Services Coordinator to bring coherence and a framework to library support for distance learning. The Distributed Education Library Services Coordinator and the Reference Department are responsible for planning, implementing, packaging and coordinating library services for distance learning. The Coordinator serves as the IUB Libraries' primary campus and professional contact for distributed education.

The Advisory Committee will provide support, offer advice and serve as a resource to the Reference Department and the Associate Dean & Director of Collection Development in the development of services and tools for distance learners. The Committee will invite resource liaisons and other librarians, staff and faculty with expertise in specific areas to provide specialized input and guidance in their areas of expertise.

The Committee will investigate means for facilitating, where appropriate, the integration of library support for distance education into functional areas and units throughout the libraries. By integrating support for distance education into units with operational responsibility for library services and resources, we can ensure depth, dependability, quality, and equity of service and access to all IUB students and faculty, on-site and at a distance. The Committee will issue a semi-annual report to the Associate Dean and an annual report to the Library Administration about its activities.

*News from the Digital Library Program

Kris Brancolini, Jon Dunn, Jenn Riley, and Perry Willett attended the Digital Library Federation (DLF) Fall Forum in Pittsburgh, Nov. 16-18. There were many informative presentations on GIS, electronic publishing, metadata standards, and other exciting issues (well, we thought they were exciting). For more information, see the DLF website at http://www.diglib.org/forums/fall2001/fall2001.htm

Perry Willett has been elected to a two-year term on the Text Encoding Initiative Consortium (TEI-C) Advisory Council. The TEI-C is an international consortium devoted to creating and maintaining standards for electronic text. Indiana University has agreed to join the TEI-C, becoming one of the Founding Members. The TEI-C Council will hold its inaugural meeting in London in January 2002. More information on the TEI-C can be found on its website at http://www.tei-c.org.

*News from IU-B Undergraduate Library Services

Extended Hours in the West Tower Begin December 3rd.

The West Tower of the Main Library will remain open until 2 a.m. from Monday, December 3rd through Thursday, December 13th for the last week of classes and finals. Many thanks in advance to the staff of Customer and Access Services, the cadets, and the Reference Assistants in the Undergraduate Library for making the extended hours possible.

Food for Thought December 10th

The College of Arts and Sciences will again serve free food and soft drinks to students on Monday evening, December 10 from 10 p.m. to midnight in the Main Library Lobby. The Deans and Faculty of the College and its departments will be serving the food, which includes fresh fruit, sandwiches, wraps, cookies, candy, bottled water and soda and more. This event was held for the first time during finals last spring and it was a big success. What's not to like about free snacks! We are buying lots more Mountain Dew, which we learned last spring is overwhelmingly the drink of choice during finals.

Renovation In the West Tower/Closing Over Break

Renovation of the restrooms on the first floor of the West Tower will begin on Monday, December 17th. The complete renovation of the restrooms and the electrical and janitor closets expected to take eight to nine weeks. Because of the demolition work required to complete the project the West Tower and the Undergraduate Library will be closed from December 15th through January 1st. We will reopen at 8 a.m. on January 2nd. If materials are needed from the UGL collection, please contact the Main Library Circulation Desk to have materials retrieved. Staff will still be able to access materials stored on the 4th and 5th floor of the West Tower. We are hopeful (as always!) that this is the first step in the complete renovation of the first floor and the development of the Information Commons.
