LIBRARY NEWS:

*The Hoagy Carmichael Collection

The Indiana University Digital Library Program and Archives of Traditional Music are pleased to announce "The Hoagy Carmichael Collection," which can be found at the following URL: http://www.dlib.indiana.edu/collections/hoagy/ Visitors to the Web site can listen to selections of Carmichael's widely recognized music or view images of manuscript and holograph music, letters, photographs, and lyric sheets. Designed to appeal to a wide audience, the web site features a virtual tour of the Hoagy Carmichael Room at the Archives of Traditional Music, as well as more in-depth information for scholars, including the complete finding aids. The site has been launched to coincide with celebrations around the country commemorating the Centennial of Carmichael's birth on November 22, 1999. The digital collection and the web site are works-in-progress; the project team will continue to add digital content and other enhancements to the site over the next five months. The Archives of Traditional Music offers the largest grouping of materials pertaining to Carmichael's life and work available anywhere. This collection will be complemented by additions from the Lilly Library and the University Archive, creating a virtual Indiana University Hoagy Carmichael Collection.

This project is partially funded by a National Leadership grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). For details about the project, contact one of its co-directors, Kristine Brancolini (brancoli@indiana.edu or Gloria Gibson (gibsong@indiana.edu).

*New Employee Orientation Reception at IU Bloomington

Reception for New Librarians, Professionals, and Support Staff

The Libraries Faculty/Staff Development Committee is planning its second semi-annual orientation program for new librarians, professionals, and support staff. This year the Committee will again have an informal reception for all employees appointed during the last six months. Please join us on Wednesday, November 17 between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. in the Main Library Third Floor Staff Lounge for refreshments and take this opportunity to meet your newest colleagues.

*Wylie House By Lamplight

On Saturday, December 4, from 5 to 8 pm, Wylie House Museum, IU Bloomington, will welcome guests for its eleventh annual winter openhouse.
A special feature of the evening will be the performance of a mini-play based on the life of Sarah Parke Morrison, Indiana University's first female graduate. The play, written by Jackson Creek eighth-grader Acacia Davis, is set in the parlor of Wylie House, where Morrison lived while attending IU. The performance will take place at 6 pm.
Before and after the play, visitors will enjoy selections of early music for the fortepiano performed by Carla Williams and Sophia Travis on the graceful little instrument once owned by the Wylie family, as well as some traditional tunes on the accordion by Sophia. At about 7 pm, Paula Bourne will lead the audience in seasonal carols and songs of peace.
Admission is free. Wylie House is located at 307 E. 2nd STreet in Bloomington. For more information, call 812-855-6224 or e-mail Bonnie Williams at bvwillia@indiana.edu.
