*InULA Memberships (renewal and new members)
INVITATION TO ALL INULA MEMBERS AND PROSPECTIVE MEMBERS
Violence, war, and destruction challenge our conceptions of civilization. On the other hand, libraries, museums, and those institutions that gather, cherish, and preserve the products of human creativity form the very basis of civilization. For those of us working in librarianship, one legitimate response to the horrific events of the past few months is to redouble our efforts in improving library services. This is a modest response, but a civilizing one. In that context, I invite you to renew your membership or to join InULA for the first time.
Thanks to the strenuous and successful efforts of former Treasurer, Wendell Johnting, and former President, Julie Nilson, I am pleased to report that InULA is now officially a not-for-profit organization as described in section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. This status means that InULA is not only exempt from federal income tax, but we can now also develop the Anniversary Fund into a scholarship endowment. So when you fill out the InULA Membership & Committee Form (http://www.indiana.edu/~inula/member/form.html) please consider making a donation to the Fund.
In order to achieve not-for profit status, the InULA Board has proposed a new By-law having to do with the purposes of the organization as well as the methods of dispensing organizational funds. One of the first items of business this year will be to have the membership vote on the By-law so that we can comply with IRS requirements for maintaining not-for-profit status.
Finally, I would like to remind everyone to volunteer for one of the InULA committees. We are seeking members for the Book Sale, Communications, Constitution and By-Laws, Program and Social, and Professional Development committees in addition to three ad-hoc committees: Committee to Organize a Second Book Sale, InULA Indianapolis Book Sale Committee, and the InULA Heritage Committee (this committee will continue to analyze and develop the organization's historical record, a task started during InULA's 25th Anniversary Celebration).
As always, InULA welcomes your membership, participation, suggestions and comments. Please feel free to contact me or any member of the Executive Board at 812-855-2970 or email to:papakhi@indiana.edu

*Freedom of Tibet Focus of Photo Exhibition
In the early morning of April 25, 2000, about 300 people gathered at the north end of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco to celebrate the start of a 500-mile-walk to Los Angeles, California. The core number of walkers was approximately fifteen, including a Tibetan monk and two nuns who had previously been imprisoned from 8 months to 21 years for maintaining traditional Buddhist practice, or publicly stating, "Tibet belongs to Tibetans." This walk was one of a continuing series of activities supported by the International Tibet Independence Movement in efforts to regain the independence of Tibet since the invasion and cultural suppression by the People's Republic of China in 1959.
Indiana artist, Jun Itoi, documented the walk of demonstration in black and white photographs. Fifteen images of the original 2,700 are the focus of an exhibition, Tibet's March for Independence, being presented by the IUPUI University Library, November 2-29, 2001.
Jun Itoi completed an MFA in Photography at the University of North Texas this year, and a BFA from the Herron School of Art, IUPUI, in 1997. Currently, Itoi is a visiting assistant professor of photography for the Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts, Indiana University, Bloomington.
Recent exhibition sites of the photography of Jun Itoi include Tisch School of Art at New York University, the Himalayan Research Bulletin juried exhibition at Portland State University, and gallery installations in Denton and Dallas, Texas. Itoi's photographs have been published in the Paseo Flamenco, in Japan, The Tibet Times, India, and The Dallas Morning News. In addition, he was the 1998 recipient of a best news photography award presented by the Illinois Press Photographers Association.
The International Tibet Independence Movement was founded in 1995 to obtain Tibet's Independence through non-violent methods. For further information about the organization, visit the web site: http://www.rangzen.com/
The installation of Tibet's March for Independence, was provided with the support of David Russick, gallery director, Herron Gallery, Herron School of Art. Information about the Gallery can be found at: http://www.herron.iupui.edu/gallery/
The free exhibition will be available for public viewing in the IUPUI University Library, Level One Hall, 755 West Michigan Street, with guest parking available in the North Street Garage. Library hours are Monday - Thursday, 8:00 a.m. - 11:00 p.m.; Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m.; Saturday, 8:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.; Sunday, 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 p.m. For further information, call (317) 278-0232.
