*New Appointments

I am pleased to announce that Diane Dallis has accepted the appointment as Instructional Design Librarian at Indiana University Bloomington Libraries effective July l, 2000. Diane has served as the Visiting Assistant Librarian for Electronic Instructional Services in Undergraduate Library Services since May 1998 where she distinguished herself by integrating Web-based instructional services and innovative tutorials into existing instructional programs. She led the project to create the Guide to Library Research () and revamped the process for creating and distributing instructional publications-a benefit enjoyed by our regional campuses libraries as well as Bloomington. Diane is rapidly establishing a track record as a presenter at various conferences, including the University of Iowa's November 1999 "Powerful Learning, Powerful Partnerships Symposium." Her contribution with colleague Emily Okada, "Tale of Two Collaborations" is forthcoming in the proceedings to be published by Scarecrow Press later this year. Diane holds a B.S. in Art Education and a Master's degree in Library Science from Indiana University, Bloomington. I would also like to thank the Search & Screen Committee for their thoughtful and expeditious work: Robert Goehlert, Chair; Anne Bock, Jeff Graf, Emily Okada, and Mary Popp.

LIBRARY NEWS

*Indiana University Libraries Receive Grant To Preserve Latin American Materials

In a partnership with other Big Ten libraries, the Indiana University Libraries recently received an $86,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to preserve unique Latin American research materials that are so brittle they can crumble with the turn of a page. The grant will allow the IU Libraries to create preservationally sound microfilm facsimiles that will preserve the intellectual content of approximately 920 volumes of Latin American periodicals.

Many of the unique publications in the Indiana University collection were produced by institutes, museums, universities, societies, research centers, libraries, and foundations from Latin American countries and represent the research interests of some of the most important minds in twentieth-century Latin America.

A high percentage of these materials were printed on acidic paper, which was produced in many countries from 1850 to 1950. Due to acid degradation, many of these materials have become so embrittled that they can no longer be handled.

"Through this important initiative, the IU Libraries will ensure that future generations of Latin Americanist scholars have access to these unique research materials," says Martha Brogan, Associate Dean of Libraries & Director of Collection Development
