*Certificate of Appreciation Awarded from the Library of Congress

At the February, 2002 annual meeting of the Music OCLC Users Group, Ralph Papakhian was awarded a certificate of appreciation from the Library of Congress for his leadership in the Program for Cooperative Cataloging's NACO (Name Authority Cooperative Organization) Music Project.

Ralph has been involved in the NACO Music Project since its outset in 1988. His efforts have been local as well as nationwide. The NACO Music Project contributes names, uniform titles, and series to the national authority file. Ralph is regarded as largely responsible for the inception of the funnel concept developed in the Project that enables over 54 music libraries to contribute to NACO as a group.

In its history, the NACO Music Project has completed over 94,000 name authority records. Ralph has been closely involved in recruiting, training, reviewing, and supporting member libraries as they have made valuable contributions to the cataloging of music collections.

At the annual Music Library Association meeting that immediately followed the Music OCLC Users Group in February, Ralph was presented with the Richard S. Hill Award for the best article on music librarianship or article of a music-bibliographic nature published during 2000. Ralph's article, "Cataloging" was published in the special issue of Notes, entitled "Music Librarianship at the Turn of the Century," vol. 56, no. 3, pp. 581-590. The MLA Publications Awards Committee commented that Ralph's article provides a clear and detailed overview of the "description and organization of the world of musical objects [that] informs the novice as well as the seasoned practitioner. Through this work, one acquires an excellent perspective of the intellectual achievements that have taken place in this important field at an especially fruitful time." This special issue was republished later that year as a monograph of the same title by Scarecrow Press.

We congratulate Ralph on his outstanding achievements both in the practical and theoretical aspects of his work as a music cataloger as well as for his overall contributions to the profession.
