Presentation-Chasing the Public Domain
Date-25 March 1999
Are you certain that the "c in the circle" symbol invariably means that the work is protected by copyright law?
Do you believe that copyright covers the whole work and everything in it?
Do you find the intricacies and restrictions of copyright law pushing you to stiffer and stiffer beverages?
If you answered yes...
Join the Copyright Management Center on 25 March 1999 in University Library 1116 at 1:30 p.m. for a wide-ranging discussion about the Public Domain. This discussion will help you avoid some of the more complex issues and potential liabilities associated with using copyrighted works by showing you how to seek out and identify works that are not protected by copyright at all. You will learn to ask whether a specific work is, or indeed can be, protected by copyright. You will explore how works originally copyrighted can subsequently lose that protection and discover what types of works simply can never be copyrighted. We also will explain when and how works reach the end-of-the-copyright-line and enter the public domain. Dwayne K. Buttler, Senior Copyright Analyst at the Copyright Management Center, will lead the discussion, but your questions about the public domain and other copyright twists will provide the foundation for learning and be most welcome.
Please let us know if you can attend by contacting us at 317-274-4400 or sending us a message at copyinfo@iupui.edu. This program is the second in a series of specialized sessions and discussion groups on copyright issues that the CMC will offer in 1999. Be sure and watch for future announcements and please let us know what topics might be of particular interest to you!
NOTE:
Please let Betty Andis (bandis@indiana.edu) or Suzann Easter
(sleaster@indiana.edu) know if you are
interested in bringing some kind of food to share by March 25(Thursday).
Please mark your calendars for Libraries Diversity Day which will be celebrated on March 31st from 1:30 to 2:30 pm in the Media Showing Room. This year, in addition to asking for contributions of foods from different cultures to share among ourselves, we will also feature an informal program.
Julie Knost, IU's Director of Affirmative Action, will speak to us about the meaning of diversity and how we can be a part of the University's efforts in this regard. The Dean will also address the issue of diversity within the Libraries.
Everyone is strongly encouraged to attend and find out what diversity really is. Those attending will not be charged for time off since this is considered a training session.
Please contact Betty Andis or Suzann Easter by telephone or e-mail as to attendance and/or food that you plan to bring. See you there!
You're Invited To The 13th Annual HPER Library Auction
The 13th annual HPER Library auction is scheduled for Thursday, April 1, 1999 from 11:30am - 1:00pm in Room 125 (HPER Faculty Lounge). Please make a note on your calendar and plan to join us in the festivities. Now would be a good time to check for items no longer needed or used. Let us help you find a new home for them. Donations in the past have ranged from home cooked gourmet meals to hand made bluebird houses to airplane rides to used barbecue grills. Use your imagination and donate to a worthy cause. Funds raised from past auctions have been used to purchase needed computers, books, and other equipment for the HPER Library.
Please plan to donate and attend this exciting event. There will be a special category of auction items for "students only" so encourage students to attend as well. Contact Erla Heyns (HEYNSE) at 5-4398 or Ada Pennington (PENNINGT) at 5-9314 to make donations or for information.

Do you know that informatics is becoming increasingly prominent but you're not sure what all it means? Then mark your calendar for the Continuing Education Committee's April 5 program. We've invited three individuals to come and speak about the field in general and what they're doing to implement it on our campus. They are:
Michael Dunn, Director of Informatics
Rob Kling, Director of SLIS's Center for Social Informatics
Gary Wiggins, Head, Chemistry Library
Our program will run from 1:30 to 3 in Room E174, Main Library. We've left lots of time for questions and answers in addition to the formal presentations so pack up your inquiring mind and join us on April 5.
