*IUPUI University Library Upgrades Computer Service

As part of an overall commitment to provide state of the art computer workstation services, IUPUI University Library has migrated its Local Area Network to new, high speed Dell servers running the Microsoft 2000 operating system. This move allows the library to stay current with the IUPUI campus strategy of moving out of the Novell LAN server environment. The new server platform will facilitate improved logins, allowing patrons to begin using their campus user id's and passwords on University Library workstations.

Currently, patrons may use either their campus ids or a generic user id to log on to Library computers. In support of the Indiana University plan to enhance computer system security, the University Library will require personal user id's at library workstations for all users beginning Summer Semester 2002. At that point, no generic user id's will allow access. Library patrons without campus credentials will be able to generate user id's by visiting the Circulation Desk of the University Library.

This represents the first time user id's have been required for use at University Library computer workstations, and patrons are reminded to logout upon completion of their use of the computers to ensure computer and user security.

For further information, visit the University Library home page at www.ulib.iupui.edu or contact Charles Dye, Director of Information Technology, at cdye@iupui.edu or (317) 278-3025.

*IUPUI University Library Features Black American Art Display

In recognition and celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and Black History Month, IUPUI University Library is currently hosting a cultural display, scheduled through February 28, 2002. The installation, entitled, Seeing Through Black American Eyes, features the private collections of IUPUI Professor William E. and Dr. Joyce G. Taylor, as well as fine art created by national artist, Dr. Margaret T. Burroughs, and Indianapolis resident, Bruce Armstrong.

The Taylor collection will also be the focus of a lecture and reception featuring William and Joyce Taylor, and hosted by the IUPUI University Library on Tuesday, February 12, 6:00 p.m. in the Lilly Auditorium, Lower Level. The program is free and open to the public.

William and Joyce Taylor have been researching the history of African American visual artists for over twenty years, and the display of books, catalogs, posters and periodicals from their collection reflect the range of this focus. Posters from national Black History exhibitions, and periodicals like The International Review of African-American Art and Black Enterprise complete the collection display.

Professor William E. Taylor, a graduate of Indiana University, has provided a sampling of his own sculpture art for the University Library display. Also included are linocut prints of Dr. Margaret T. Burroughs, founding director of the DuSable Museum of African-American History, Chicago, Illinois. Bruce Armstrong studied art at Crispus Attucks High School and Indiana University, and his art pieces featured in the display include pastels, acrylics and charcoal, all created in 2000-2001.
